Wolverines brutalize Brutus

In this week of storied rivalries, the matchup between Ohio State and Michigan is amongst the best. Even wild animals are getting involved.
Earlier this week, the Detroit Zoo staff constructed a Brutus Buckeye figure out of cardboard and flour paste and gave it to its pair of Wolverines. It took Luka and Jigi less than five minutes to topple the 4-foot high pinata and rip its head off. A short while later they ripped open its chest to find their prize — a hunk of meat — hidden inside.
Elizabeth Arbaugh, an animal welfare manager at the zoo, said
introducing unpredictable elements such as pinatas give the animals
control in their environment and encourage them to respond in species-typical ways.
“It’s not something they get every day, so it’s something novel,”
Arbaugh said as the wolverines tore off chunks of Brutus. “They’ve
been playing with this for 45 minutes. Most of our guests stopped
watching, but these guys are still having a blast with it.”
Below is a photo of one of the critters gnawing on a headless Brutus from the Detroit Zoo website. For a full series of photos showing how the mauling went down, visit the Zoo’s site.
